When a test answers a real question and when it doesn't. Air versus surface samples, and why the tester should not be the remover.
Testing details
Street flooding, roof leaks and long power outages after hurricanes like Ida and Francine. Flood cuts, drying and what your flood policy expects.
Flood and storm details
Slow roof leaks, bath fans vented into the attic and poor ventilation can stain roof decking for months before anyone climbs up to look.
Attic details
Shotgun houses and raised cottages on brick piers sit over damp, humid air. Look for a musty smell, sagging insulation and stained joists.
Crawl space details
Shower ceilings, caulk lines and weak exhaust fans. Often small jobs, and some you can clean yourself under the EPA's 10 square foot guideline.
Bathroom details
Cold ducts and coils sweat in summer air with dew points in the 70s. Clogged drain pans and leaky ducts can feed a smell every time the AC kicks on.

Renter detailsNOLA Mold Remediation does not inspect, test or remove mold. It passes your request to independent companies that do.
Use the form or call. Say where the mold is, roughly how big it looks, what got wet and when, and whether you own or rent. Photos can come later.
Independent mold inspection and remediation companies that work in your part of the metro contact you to look at the problem and quote it. Companies may pay to receive requests.
Read each written scope, check the LSLBC license and insurance, and pick the company you trust, or none. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.
Louisiana requires a Mold Remediation license from the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) for mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up (La. R.S. 37:2150.1). Before you sign, look up the company's license on the LSLBC website. Not every company that replies will hold that license, so check each one yourself.
In Louisiana, a mold remediation contractor may not also do the mold assessment on the same property, or own the company that does (R.S. 37:2158). If you want an assessment before the work or a clearance test after it, use a separate company. Louisiana has no state license for mold inspectors that this site could find, so ask an inspector about training, insurance and the lab they use.
A licensed contractor must give you a written contract with its license number, price and insurance certificates, and a written report of the work. More in the mold FAQ.
Published national guides put remediation at about $10 to $25 per square foot of affected area and a typical job at $1,200 to $3,750 (This Old House, Mar 2026), with a wider $1,500 to $9,000 from Fixr (Aug 2025). Testing runs about $450 to $800. The cost page has the full table and a calculator. Your quotes come from the companies, not from this site.
Cost guide and calculatorFlood damage goes to your flood (NFIP) policy, and wind, roof and plumbing damage usually goes to your homeowners policy. Mold coverage depends on the cause and your policy's mold limits. No one can promise coverage in advance.
Flood and storm moldRain and muggy air. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put New Orleans at about 63 inches of rain a year at the airport, with June the wettest month. From June through August the average dew point sits around 72 to 74°F. The EPA suggests keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent. In a New Orleans summer that depends on the AC, and cold ducts and pipes can sweat.
Old houses, raised houses. The median New Orleans home was built in 1960, and about 31 percent of homes were built in 1939 or earlier. Many are shotgun houses and cottages raised on brick piers over a crawl space, where under-floor insulation and joists live in outdoor air. Newer homes in the suburbs are more often on a slab, where a flood or leak wets the bottom of the drywall and the wall cavity.
Storms and power outages. Every metro parish was in FEMA disaster declarations for Hurricanes Katrina (2005), Gustav (2008), Isaac (2012), Ida (2021) and Francine (2024). After Ida, the National Hurricane Center reported that all power was lost in Jefferson Parish, so many homes went days without AC while they were wet. In September 2024, Francine dropped about 8 to 9.5 inches of rain on Metairie, Kenner, New Orleans and Mandeville, mostly within a few hours (National Weather Service).
Lots of renters. About 49 percent of New Orleans households rent, and many live in doubles and small buildings where one unit's leak can reach the next. Renters can start with the rental and apartment mold page, and anyone with a raised home can read about crawl space mold.
Requests come from across New Orleans, from Uptown and Gentilly to Lakeview, New Orleans East and Algiers, and from these towns. Companies also cover Terrytown, River Ridge, Harahan and Westwego.

Published national guides put remediation at about $10 to $25 per square foot of affected area, so 100 square feet often lands near $1,000 to $2,500. This Old House puts a typical job at $1,200 to $3,750. These are estimates, not quotes. See the cost guide and calculator.
For larger jobs, yes. Louisiana requires a Mold Remediation license from the LSLBC for mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up (La. R.S. 37:2150.1). Before you sign, look up the company's license on the LSLBC website. Owners and tenants may clean their own property without a license (R.S. 37:2157).
Not in Louisiana. A mold remediation contractor may not also do the mold assessment on the same property, or own the company that does (R.S. 37:2158). If you want an assessment or a clearance test, hire a separate, independent company. Requests here can reach both kinds of company.
Usually not. The EPA says that in most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary. Testing can help when you smell mold but can't find it, when you have a dispute with a landlord or seller, or when you want a clearance check after the work. See mold inspection and testing.
Often, if the patch is small and the water problem is fixed. The EPA says homeowners can usually handle an area of less than about 10 square feet, roughly 3 feet by 3 feet. Wear gloves and a mask, scrub with detergent and water, and dry the area fully. Larger areas, mold inside walls or ducts, or flood water call for a professional.
