The Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate, down 2.0% since 2020. Kenner is the largest city in Jefferson Parish.
34.0% of Kenner homes were built in the 1970s alone, more than any other decade.
Most Kenner homes are owner-occupied, so the repair and the insurance call usually fall to the owner.
The NOAA 1991–2020 normal at the airport, inside Kenner city limits, is 63.35 inches a year. June is the wettest month.
Kenner grew from 5,535 people in 1950 to 17,037 in 1960, 29,858 in 1970 and 66,382 in 1980. Much of that growth began in the late 1950s, when developers drained and filled swampland in the northern half of the city. The older riverside part of town, around the Rivertown historic district, is a different kind of neighborhood.
That history shapes the mold problems you are likely to see. Homes from the 1970s boom are now around 50 years old. Many have original or second-generation plumbing, aging AC equipment and roofs that have been through several hurricanes. A slow leak in a wall or a sweating duct can go unnoticed for months. These are common patterns in homes of this age, not a count of Kenner jobs.
| Date | Event | What was recorded |
|---|---|---|
| May 1995 | Heavy rain flood | Flooded Kenner along with Metairie, Harahan and River Ridge; FEMA disaster declaration for Jefferson Parish |
| Aug 29, 2021 | Hurricane Ida | High-water mark of 5.9 feet above ground in Kenner, outside the federal risk-reduction system (National Hurricane Center); all Jefferson Parish power lost |
| Sep 11, 2024 | Hurricane Francine | 8.77 inches of rain at a gauge 0.8 miles northeast of Kenner (National Weather Service) |
Ida's outage matters for mold as much as the water did. Without power, the AC stops pulling moisture out of the air, and a house that was dry starts absorbing humidity within days.

If the area is smaller than about 10 square feet, EPA says homeowners can usually clean it themselves. Owners and tenants may do their own work without a license in Louisiana. Larger areas, anything inside ducts, and anything after a flood are worth a professional quote.
Summer air here carries a lot of water. NOAA's normals for the airport, which sits inside Kenner, show average dew points of about 72 to 74°F from June through August. AC ducts, air handlers and cold-water lines run cooler than that and can sweat. A clogged condensate line can also overflow into a closet or ceiling. Find the wet spot before anyone cleans.
Photograph and video everything before tear-out, keep samples if your adjuster asks, and dry out within 24 to 48 hours where you can. FEMA says NFIP policyholders must take steps to limit mold after a flood and should talk to their adjuster before signing a cleaning or remediation contract. Then get quotes.
For mold remediation projects of about $7,500 and up, Louisiana requires a Mold Remediation license from the LSLBC. Smaller jobs fall below that line. Either way, look up the company on the LSLBC website before you sign, and ask for a written contract and proof of insurance. Not every company that replies will hold that license, so check.
Typical national ranges, not quotes: HVAC and duct mold work runs $3,000 to $10,000 and combined water damage and mold work $2,700 to $10,000 (Fixr, Aug 2025). The cost guide has the full table.
